Customize fields

Objective

In this comprehensive guide, we will take you through the process of customizing fields in the Power Platform. Fields are fundamental to how data is structured and presented in your apps. Customizing fields allows you to adapt the platform to your organization's unique requirements.

The purpose of Customizing Fields:
Customizing fields in the Power Platform serves several key purposes:
- Adapt to Business Needs: Customize fields to match your organization's specific data requirements.
- Data Validation: Set up data validation rules to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
- User Experience: Modify field properties to enhance the user experience and improve data entry.

Prerequisites

  • Access Permissions: Make sure you have the necessary permissions to modify fields within the app. (Minimum 'System Customizer'-Security Role or Admin)
  • Understanding of Data Model: A good grasp of the data model is crucial. You should know which entities and tables the fields belong to and how they are related.

Step 1: Open the Power Platform Step 2: Navigate to the Environment
  • Choose the specific environment where you want to customize fields. Click on the top-right environment name to enter it.
Step 3: Navigate to the correct Solution
  • Click on Solution in the left navigation.
  • Open your storage for customization (see a guide on how to create one here)
Step 4: Access the Entity (Table) for Customization
  • In your chosen Solution, you see all Objectives
  • Navigate to Tables and click on the little arrow
  • Now choose the specific entity (table) or data source that contains the field you want to customize. Click on the relevant entity.
Step 5: Access the Fields Section
  • Once in the entity, find and click on the Columns section. This is where you will customize the properties of the fields.
Step 6: Select the Field to Customize
  • In the "Columns" section, you will see a list of fields associated with the entity. Choose the field you want to customize by clicking on its name.
Step 7: Start Customizing
  • Click on the "Edit" button to enter the customization mode for the selected field.
Step 8: Modify Field Properties
  • While in the customization mode, you can adjust various properties of the field, including its display name, data type, description, and more.
Step 9: Set Data Validation Rules (Optional)
  • If necessary, define data validation rules for the field, such as maximum length, format, or required values.
Step 10: Save and publish your Changes
  • Once you've made the desired modifications, don't forget to save and publish your changes, by clicking on Tables in the left Navigation bar (Objects) and press the Button Publish all customizations

You can also create new Fields by clicking on + New Column on the top.

Your customized field is now ready for use in your Power App. Customized fields ensure that your app's data structure is tailored to your organization's specific needs, improving data accuracy and efficiency.
